Your rights

Good faith estimate

Under the No Surprises Act, anyone who is uninsured or who chooses not to use insurance has the right to a written estimate of what their care will cost before it begins.

What you are entitled to

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate explaining how much your care will cost. Health care providers must give people who are uninsured or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychological testing, report preparation, feedback sessions, and psychotherapy.

How you receive yours

You will receive a written estimate before your first appointment, and at any time on request. If your evaluation expands — for example, if additional testing is indicated — a revised estimate is provided before that work begins. Current published rates are listed on the fees page.

If the bill is higher than the estimate

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Keep a copy or picture of your estimate. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call (800) 985-3059.
