A pre-surgical evaluation may be requested for various reasons. People planning to undergo bariatric surgery, spinal cord stimulator placement, transplantation, or other medical procedures may have their physician or insurance company request a psychological evaluation. This will provide the referring source with information about your psychological functioning and mental preparedness for the surgery or procedure. Psychological and behavioral factors can be crucial in determining your readiness for the surgery. The evaluation will help identify your strengths, weaknesses, and motivation for the surgery. It can also help pinpoint areas where you might need additional support or assistance. Typically lasting an hour to two, you will have a discussion with a psychologist about all aspects of your life and talk about your understanding of the procedure. If necessary, the evaluation may also include cognitive testing.evaluation may also include cognitive testing.
Neuropsychological evaluations are assessments used to examine the relationship between the brain and behavior. These evaluations test a range of mental functions, such as reading, language, attention, learning, speed of thinking, reasoning, memory, and problem-solving, as well as mood and behavior. They can help healthcare providers determine a diagnosis, provide baseline cognitive functioning, identify strengths and weaknesses in your thinking processes, understand your risk for changes in cognition that can occur with certain brain surgeries, and develop plans for future treatment and interventions. Typically, an assessment begins with a thorough interview that lasts around an hour and is followed by anywhere from two to three hours of engagement in cognitive tasks. After this is completed, a follow-up appointment is scheduled to discuss results and go over tailored recommendations.
Therapy treatments are available for most medical related mental health conditions, including substance use, depression, anxiety, trauma, and more. Time limited, they are adaptable, allowing customized treatment to meet patient's needs, values, goals, and preferences. Patients play an active role in therapy
